About eSIMs

What they are and how they differ from the card you already have.

What is an eSIM?

A SIM that's built into your phone: you set it up by scanning a QR code, with no card to insert. It works alongside your usual SIM and you can switch it on or off from Settings.

Do I lose my number or my WhatsApp?

No. Your SIM and your number stay active, and WhatsApp works with your usual number with nothing to set up: the eSIM handles your travel data (and the minutes, on plans that include them).

Can I make calls or receive texts?

Most plans are data only. Calls and texts still go through your usual SIM, so your provider may charge roaming for them. Some destinations do have plans that include minutes: where they exist, they are marked on that destination's page.

Compatibility

Whether your phone supports one, and what happens if you change phones.

Does my phone support eSIM?

Most phones sold since 2019: iPhone XS or later, Galaxy S20 or later, Pixel 3 or later and many more. It has to be unlocked.

What if I delete the eSIM or change phones?

The QR code works once: if you delete the eSIM, you can't reinstall it with the same code. If that happens, or you switch phones mid-trip, message us and we'll sort it out with you.

Buying and receiving

When it arrives, when the clock starts and what if you don't travel.

When do I get my eSIM?

Right away. As soon as you pay, an email arrives with the QR code and the instructions. No shipping, no waiting.

When does validity start counting?

On almost every plan, with the first connection to a network at your destination: you can buy and install it weeks before travelling without using up a day. In a few destinations the plan starts when you install the eSIM, so there it's best to install it just before you leave. Each plan says so on its page, before you pay.

What if I end up not travelling?

If you haven't installed the eSIM or activated the plan, we'll refund you. Message us with your order number and we'll take care of it: the money goes back to your original payment method.

Why did my bank charge more than the price shown?

The price you see is what we charge, with nothing added: no taxes and no fees on our side. Anything extra on your statement comes from your bank: the conversion fee if your card is in another currency and, in some countries, a local tax the bank itself withholds on purchases from foreign merchants. If it happens to you, write to us with your order number and we'll confirm the exact amount we charged.

Install and activate

Putting it on your phone and switching it on when you land.

Do I have to switch anything on when I land?

Just data roaming on your Gigapass line. The eSIM connects to the local network by itself, and there are no extra charges: the price is fixed.

What if I can't get online?

Message us and we'll sort it out with you, wherever you are. The most common fix is switching on data roaming for your Gigapass line.

While you travel

Data, speed, sharing your connection and topping up.

Can I share data with my laptop?

Yes, hotspot is included in every plan.

How fast is the connection?

As fast as the local network allows: 5G or 4G in most destinations. On unlimited plans the network may apply a fair use policy if usage is very high; with normal use you won't notice it.

What if I run out of data?

You top up the same plan from your account in a minute. The top-up goes onto the eSIM you already have installed: nothing new to scan.

How do I check how much data I have left?

In your account, any time. You can top up right there if you're running low.

Glossary

The terms you'll see in the email and in your phone settings.

eSIM
A digital SIM built into your phone. It installs with a code instead of a card and works alongside the SIM you already use.
Installation QR
The code you scan to install the eSIM. It comes in the delivery email and works ONCE: if you delete the eSIM, that code stops working.
SM-DP+ server
The address your phone downloads the eSIM from. You only need it to install manually, when you can't scan the QR.
Activation code
The key that goes with the SM-DP+ server when installing manually. It's the QR code written out.
ICCID
The number that identifies your eSIM. It's what we'll ask for if you contact support.
APN
The data access point. It almost always sets itself up; only change it if we ask you to.
Data roaming
The switch you turn on for the Gigapass line when you land. Turn it on for that line only: on your usual line, it's what triggers your provider's roaming charges.
