Internet in the United States: coverage, distances and emergency alerts
Excellent coverage in the cities and enormous gaps in between. What to expect on a road route and what to sort out before flying.
The United States has one of the best urban coverages in the world and, at the same time, some of the largest gaps a traveller will ever meet. Both are true, and it depends entirely on where you are going.
In the city, and between cities
New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, San Francisco: 4G and 5G without argument, with mid-band 5G already well deployed. Airports, the metro in the big cities and shopping malls are all covered.
The change comes on the highway. The country is enormous, and there are stretches of interstate, above all in the west and the midwest, where you drive dozens of miles with no signal. In the national parks (Yellowstone, Zion, Death Valley, much of the Grand Canyon) coverage is token or simply absent.

Which carriers there are
Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile share the market. Their rural coverage differs and the difference is real: there are areas one reaches and another does not. Which network an eSIM plan uses is written on the destination's technical sheet, and on a road trip it is worth looking at.
A quirk nobody mentions: the emergency alerts
The United States emergency alert system pushes notices to the phone about tornadoes, floods, fires and missing children. They arrive even if you do not understand where they come from, and they sound loudly, even on silent.
This is not a fault: it is the system working. In tornado or wildfire season it is best not to disable them, even when they wake you in the middle of the night.
911, and why data is worth having
Emergency calls work from any phone with coverage, whether or not the line is active. But a lot of roadside assistance and travel insurance is handled through an app, and there you do need data. In a country with these distances, that is a weighty reason not to be left without a connection.

Three things for a road route
- Download the maps for the WHOLE route, not just the cities. That is the difference between getting your bearings on a stretch with no signal and not.
- Save the rental company and insurance numbers in your contacts. Without data, calls still go through.
- If you are going to national parks, tell someone your plan for the day. This is not scaremongering: there is no coverage there, and rescue depends on someone noticing you are missing.
