Internet in South Africa: good coverage and two things worth knowing

A better network than many expect, scheduled power cuts and a phone to use with your head. The practical guide.

South Africa surprises on connectivity: wide 4G, 5G in the big cities and good coverage on the tourist routes. What you need to understand are two things about the country that affect the phone more than the network itself.

One: the power cuts

The country has lived through scheduled power cuts, and when they happen they take out the wi-fi in accommodation and, if they drag on, even phone masts for lack of backup.

For a traveller that means two things: a power bank always charged, and depending on the hotel wi-fi for nothing important.

Two: the phone in the street

In the big cities the local habit is not to carry the phone in your hand on the street and to use it inside shops, in the car or at your accommodation. This is not paranoia: it is what people there do, and it is worth copying.

Inside the reserves the signal appears in patches and many lodges expressly ask you not to use the phone during sightings. Carry it with maps downloaded and a full battery, and use it little.

How to match the data plan to a trip like this is in how many gigabytes a trip really uses.

Frequently asked questions

Is coverage good in South Africa?

Yes, wide 4G and 5G in the big cities, with a good signal on the tourist routes. In reserves and rural areas it is patchy.

How do the power cuts affect things?

They take out the wi-fi in accommodation and, if they drag on, can affect masts. Power bank charged and do not depend on the hotel wi-fi.

Is it safe to use the phone in the street?

In the big cities the local habit is the sensible one: use it inside shops or in the car and do not carry it in your hand while walking.

Will I have coverage on safari?

In patches, and many lodges ask you not to use the phone during sightings. Take your maps downloaded.
