Internet in Mexico: from the Riviera Maya to the sierra
Solid coverage in the cities and tourist areas, patchy in the sierra and on stretches of road. What to have sorted before landing.

If the trip involves driving through Chiapas, Oaxaca or the sierra in general, count on being without data at times and prepare the route beforehand.
Which carriers there are
Telcel is the dominant one and the one that reaches furthest outside the cities, followed by AT&T México and Movistar. In tourist areas all three work well; on a mountain road the difference shows.
The local SIM paperwork
Buying a prepaid SIM in Mexico is straightforward and they are found in convenience stores and any carrier shop. Registration has tightened over the years, so take your passport.
The advantage of arriving with an eSIM installed is the usual one: in Cancún or Mexico City the trip from the airport is organised on the phone, and that is precisely the moment when you do not yet have a local line.
What you are going to use
Maps, ride-hailing apps and messaging use little. What climbs is video and photos, and on a trip to Mexico plenty get taken.

Three practical things
- Download the maps for the area and, if you are driving, the whole route. In the sierra that is not optional.
- Turn off data roaming on your usual line: Mexico is outside the European Union and your plan may charge by use.
- Save the accommodation and transport numbers in your contacts. Without data, calls and texts keep working.
