It is one of the least understood parts of a trip, starting with who can use it: the traveller VAT refund is for people who live OUTSIDE the area where they made the purchase and take the goods home with them. Inside the European Union that means a visitor from a non-EU country; someone living in France cannot claim it for shopping in Italy. Many countries outside Europe run schemes of their own with the same logic.

## How it works, in order

1. In the shop, ask for the refund document and show your passport.
2. Keep the document with the invoice and the item unused.
3. Before you leave the territory, have the operation validated at customs in the airport or port.
4. With the validation done, you receive the amount by whichever method you chose.

Step three is where nearly everyone comes unstuck: without the customs validation there is no refund, and that validation happens BEFORE you check your luggage in if the item is going in your case.

## Why it fails so often

- You arrive with no time to spare and the customs queue is long.
- The item is in checked luggage and can't be shown.
- The original invoice is missing or the document is incomplete.
- The deadline between the purchase and leaving the territory has passed.
- A handling fee is deducted that nobody had looked at.

## When it is worth it

On small purchases, almost never: between the minimum per invoice and the handling fee, the time at customs is worth more. On big purchases, yes, and there it pays to reach the airport with plenty of margin.

> No customs stamp, no refund, and that stamp is asked for before you check the bag in.

General information and not tax advice: the minimum amounts, the deadlines and the procedure are set by each country's rules and they change. The source is the relevant tax authority.

## Frequently asked questions

**Who can claim a VAT refund?**

Someone who lives outside the area where they bought and takes the goods with them. In the European Union that means a visitor from a non-EU country, not a resident of another EU country.

**Where is it validated?**

At customs in the airport or port where you leave the territory, and before checking your luggage in if the item is in your case.

**Why was my refund refused?**

The most common reasons are not validating at customs, not being able to show the item, a missing original invoice or a missed deadline.

**Is it always worth it?**

On small purchases, almost never: between the minimum per invoice and the handling fee, the time spent doesn't pay off.
