On the road

No courses and no strange apps. The light, the framing, two settings on the phone and how to save them without burning through your data plan.

Travel photos improve far more from four habits than from a new phone. And all four can be learned in an afternoon.

## 1. The hour, which decides more than the camera

The first and last hour of light make almost any photo good, and midday ruins it almost every time. If a place matters to you, go early: there are also fewer people.

## 2. Get closer and put somebody in it

The most common mistake is the whole landscape with nothing to give it scale. One person in the frame, however small, changes the photo completely and turns it into a memory rather than a postcard.

## 3. Two settings that genuinely matter

- The grid, so horizons do not tilt: nothing gives away a photo taken in a hurry more.
- Tap to focus and swipe to lower the exposure, which is what saves a blown-out sky.

With that and nothing else, half your photos get better.

## 4. Saving without burning the plan

On a trip you take hundreds of photos and many upload themselves the moment there is a connection. That is the biggest data item of almost every trip, and one setting keeps it in check.

1. Backup on wi-fi only, and let it upload overnight.
2. If you shoot video, look at the resolution: recording at maximum quality fills the phone in two days.
3. Empty the gallery's bin now and then, since it takes up just as much room.
4. And delete as you go: fifteen photos of the same place are not a memory, they are a storage problem.

What each thing uses is in [how many gigabytes a trip really uses](https://getgigapass.com/en/blog/how-much-data-do-i-need-to-travel).

> The phone does not improve the photo: what improves it is the hour you leave the house.

Ask before photographing people, and respect the rules of temples, museums and archaeological sites. In some countries photographing certain buildings has legal consequences.

Know where you're going?

Pick your destination, days and data. Install it before you leave and pay once.

## Frequently asked questions

**What is the best time for travel photos?**

The first and last hour of light. Midday is the worst and usually also when there are the most people.

**Which phone settings help?**

The grid so horizons do not tilt, and tapping to focus while swiping to lower the exposure.

**How do I stop photos eating my data plan?**

By setting backup to wi-fi only, so they upload overnight from the accommodation.

**Can I photograph whatever I like?**

No. There are temples, museums and buildings where it is forbidden, and in some countries photographing certain installations has legal consequences.
