Planning

What you improvise in two weeks, you pay for in four months. Paperwork, money, health and connectivity for a long trip, without the fluff.

A long trip isn't a short one multiplied. Things appear that don't exist over two weeks: expiry dates, renewals, post piling up, an empty home and an administrative life that carries on without you.

En corto

- Check every expiry date: passport, cards, licence and the insurance itself.
- Leave someone you trust with access to your documents.
- Your money across at least two institutions and two different cards.
- Connectivity in stages, not one giant plan.

## The admin, which is what gets forgotten

- Expiry dates: passport, bank cards, driving licence and the insurance itself.
- Direct debits and bills: so they don't leave your account overdrawn while you're away.
- Post: someone to collect it, or a redirection and holding service.
- Renewals that fall during the trip and can't be done remotely.

## The money

On a long trip the most common failure isn't theft: it's a card blocked for security after three weeks. Hence the rule: two different institutions, two different cards, and don't carry them together.

It's also worth knowing how you'd receive emergency money from home, because halfway through a trip isn't the moment to find out.

The fees and the exchange rate, which really add up over months, are in [how to pay abroad without giving away fees](https://getgigapass.com/en/blog/paying-by-card-abroad).

## Connectivity, in stages

One giant plan for four months is almost never the best option. Plans by country use local networks and cover rural areas better, and reviewing it every few weeks is what stops you running out of data right at the end.

## Health

1. A medical and dental check-up before leaving, which is cheaper here than an emergency there.
2. Vaccinations in good time, because some need several doses weeks apart.
3. Medication for the whole trip, in your hand luggage and with a doctor's letter.
4. Insurance covering the full duration and the activities you're planning.

> On a two-week trip, improvising is free. On a four-month one, every unresolved thing comes back twice.

Registering as a traveller with your country's foreign ministry is free and means they know you're there if something serious happens in the area.

Know where you're going?

Pick your destination, days and data. Install it before you leave and pay once.

## Frequently asked questions

**What expires during a long trip?**

Passport, bank cards, driving licence and the insurance itself. It's worth checking all four dates before you leave.

**How many cards should I carry?**

At least two, from different institutions and kept in different places. The most common problem isn't theft, it's a security block.

**One data plan for the whole trip?**

Almost never the best option. In stages or by country usually gives better coverage and forces you to keep an eye on usage along the way.

**What do I do about post and direct debits?**

Leave someone to collect the post and go through your direct debits so they don't leave your account overdrawn while you're away.
