Registration, ID number, bank, healthcare and address. Almost every step depends on the one before it, so the right order saves weeks.

Every country has the same chain of paperwork under different names, and every country has the same bottleneck: each step demands the previous one, and one of them demands an address you do not have yet.

## The typical chain

1. An address, even a temporary one, because almost everything hangs off it.
2. Registration with the local authority or its equivalent.
3. Tax number or its counterpart.
4. A bank account, which usually asks for the two above.
5. Registration with the health system and an assigned doctor.
6. And then the rest: transport, utilities, insurance.

When a step gets stuck it is almost always because the previous one is missing, not because you are doing it wrong.

## The temporary address trick

Many countries accept a temporary address to start the chain, and some even accept a letter from whoever is putting you up. Asking directly at the relevant office saves weeks of digging through forums.

## What actually helps

- Carry every document scanned and printed too, two copies of each.
- Book an appointment as soon as you arrive, because in many cities the wait runs into weeks.
- Before you leave the counter, ask what they will want from you next time.
- And write down the name of whoever served you and the date, which in long processes is worth its weight in gold.

## And connectivity, which here is infrastructure

All of this runs on booking appointments online, receiving codes and showing documents from your phone. Arriving with no data and then depending on a cafe's wifi to book a consular appointment is an unnecessary way to make your first weeks harder.

A data plan covers that gap until you have a local line, which is what you will need afterwards.

Which of the two suits you and when is in [local line or your usual one when you live abroad](https://getgigapass.com/en/blog/local-line-living-abroad).

General information: every country has its own names and its own deadlines. What counts is the local administration and your country's mission there.

Know where you're going?

Pick your destination, days and data. Install it before you leave and pay once.

## Frequently asked questions

**Which piece of paperwork comes first when I arrive?**

Getting an address, even a temporary one: registration, your ID number and the bank account all hang off it.

**Can I use a temporary address?**

In many countries yes, and sometimes even a letter from whoever is putting you up. It is worth asking at the office itself.

**Why does a step always get stuck?**

Because the previous link in the chain is missing. It is almost never a mistake on your part.

**Do I need mobile data the moment I land?**

In practice yes: appointments, codes and documents all go through your phone. A data plan covers the gap until you have a local line.
