How it works

The profile doesn't travel across with your photos. What to do before you set up a new handset, how the transfer works, and what happens if the old phone won't turn on.

When you get a new phone, your photos, apps and messages come across on their own. Your lines don't. An eSIM profile lives inside the old handset's chip and has to be moved by hand, and that's the surprise a lot of people get on day one.

## Two different lines, two different jobs

| Which line | How it moves |
| --- | --- |
| Your everyday line as an eSIM | Your operator transfers it, or the system's quick transfer does |
| Your everyday line on a card | You take the card out and put it in the new phone |
| A travel eSIM | Depends on the provider: it may need a fresh code |

## Quick transfer between phones

Modern systems let you move an eSIM from one handset to another without calling anybody, by putting the two side by side during initial setup. It works well when both phones are the same brand and your operator supports it.

When it doesn't work, the way out is to ask your operator for a fresh profile for the new phone, which is free with almost every provider.

## What to do BEFORE you touch anything

1. Don't delete the eSIM from the old phone until the new one is working.
2. Check the new phone supports eSIM and is carrier unlocked.
3. Have the purchase email to hand for any travel eSIMs you want to keep.
4. Do the swap at home on wifi, not on the day of your flight.

That first point is what prevents 90% of the problems: a deleted profile doesn't come back on its own.

## If the old phone won't turn on

Then quick transfer isn't possible and you have to request fresh profiles: your own line from your operator, and the travel eSIM from its provider, who will decide whether it can be reissued.

That's exactly why it's worth keeping the purchase email until the end of your trip.

## And if the swap happens mid-trip

That's the worst possible moment, because requesting a fresh profile needs a connection and sometimes identity checks. If you have to buy a phone abroad after a breakage or a theft, the quick route is usually a local physical card to get you going, and sorting the rest out when you're home.

What to do in that situation, step by step, is in [what to do if you lose your phone abroad](https://getgigapass.com/en/blog/lost-phone-abroad).

Before you sell or hand on the old phone, delete its eSIM profiles. That isn't the same as resetting the handset, and some models keep the profile after a reset unless you remove it explicitly.

Know where you're going?

Pick your destination, days and data. Install it before you leave and pay once.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does an eSIM move across on its own when I change phone?**

Not the way photos and apps do. There's a quick transfer between handsets that works in many cases, and if it doesn't, you request a fresh profile.

**Can I move a travel eSIM to another phone?**

It depends on the provider: some allow a reinstall and others require a fresh code. Keep the purchase email so you can ask.

**What should I do first with a new phone?**

Check the new one supports eSIM and is unlocked, and don't delete anything from the old one until the line works on the new one.

**What if the old phone won't turn on?**

You have to request fresh profiles: your own line from your operator and the travel eSIM from its provider.

**Do I have to delete the eSIM before selling my phone?**

Yes, and explicitly: resetting the handset doesn't always remove the profiles.
