Vietnam surprises almost everyone who arrives: mobile coverage is broad, fast and reaches places you would not expect, including small villages in the north. It is one of the destinations where connectivity gives the least trouble.

## Coverage

4G across practically the whole country, rural areas included, and 5G in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and other large cities. On the mountain routes in the north, around Sapa and Ha Giang, there are stretches with no signal, and in Ha Long Bay it depends on where the boat is.

## A trip from north to south

The typical trip links Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City, with night trains, domestic flights and a fair number of transfers. Through all of it the phone acts as wallet, map and translator at once.

- Train and bus tickets are booked and shown from the phone.
- Ride-hailing apps work well in the cities and save haggling over every trip.
- Paying by phone and by code is very widespread, down to small stalls.
- The translator is in constant use outside the tourist areas.

## Local SIM, roaming or eSIM

Local lines are cheap and easy to get, and roaming on a European plan treats Vietnam as an international zone, which is the expensive part. The eSIM takes the first-day advantage: you land with data and without a queue.

The comparison of the three options is in [roaming, eSIM or local SIM](https://getgigapass.com/en/blog/roaming-or-esim).

## What you are going to use

Between 300 and 600 MB a day on a normal trip. It is a destination of many photos and a lot of map use, and little long video unless you publish daily.

Some internet services have been limited in the country at particular moments. It is not the usual state of affairs for a tourist, but it is worth having a second way of reaching home.

Leaving soon?

Pick the days and the data you need. Install it before you leave and pay once.

He left for three months in Southeast Asia and came back four years later. He writes about the places where sorting out a local line is half the trouble.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is coverage good in Vietnam?**

Yes, among the best in Southeast Asia: 4G across almost the whole country and 5G in the large cities. The gaps are on the mountain routes in the north.

**Do I need data to get around Vietnam?**

It helps a great deal: tickets, transport and translation are all handled from the phone, and payment by code is very widespread.

**Is the local SIM cheap?**

Yes, local lines are inexpensive and easy to get. The eSIM's advantage is arriving with data from the first minute.

**How much data do I need?**

Between 300 and 600 MB a day on a normal trip, that is roughly 5 to 9 GB over two weeks.

**Is there coverage in Ha Long Bay?**

It depends on the area and the boat. Near the coast there is usually signal, and among the islets it comes and goes.
