Türkiye has a modern mobile network that is very good in the areas tourism reaches, and at the same time it is a destination where the local line is not the convenient option you might expect. Both are worth knowing before landing.

## Coverage

Broad 4G across the whole country and 5G in the large cities. Istanbul is covered end to end, including the metro and the Bosphorus ferries, and the tourist areas on the coast and in Cappadocia give no trouble either.

The gaps appear in inland Anatolia, in the mountains of the east and in the valleys of Cappadocia once you move away from the villages, which is precisely where the walking routes go.

## Handset registration, the country's quirk

Türkiye requires foreign handsets using a Turkish line beyond a set period to be registered. Once that period passes without registration the phone stops working on the country's networks, and registration has a cost and a procedure.

On a one- or two-week trip with a local SIM it does not actually kick in, but it is the reason anyone staying a long spell gets an unpleasant surprise. With roaming or a travel eSIM it does not apply, because you are not using a Turkish line registered in your name.

## Roaming, local SIM or eSIM

| Option | What matters |
| --- | --- |
| Roaming on your plan | Türkiye is outside the Union: charged as an international zone |
| Local SIM | Cheap for residents, with separate tourist rates and handset registration behind it |
| Travel eSIM | Installed at home and opens no Turkish line in your name |

What your carrier charges in Türkiye and what to check beforehand is in [roaming in Türkiye](https://getgigapass.com/en/blog/roaming-turkey).

## What the phone is used for here

A lot of translation and a lot of maps. The alphabet is Latin, which helps, but the language resembles nothing familiar, and the distances between Istanbul, Cappadocia and the coast keep navigation busy.

Taxis and city transport in Istanbul work out better with an app than with explanations, and markets are far easier to haggle in with the translator open.

## Public wi-fi

There is wi-fi in hotels, cafés and many restaurants, with the habit of asking for a code by text to a Turkish number, which is exactly what a visitor does not have. It is a practical reason to bring your own data.

At certain moments the country has applied temporary restrictions to particular internet services. It is not the usual state of affairs, but it is worth having a second way of reaching home just in case.

Leaving soon?

Pick the days and the data you need. Install it before you leave and pay once.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is mobile coverage good in Türkiye?**

Yes, broad 4G across the whole country and 5G in the large cities. The gaps are in inland Anatolia, the eastern mountains and the Cappadocian valleys outside the villages.

**Do I have to register my phone in Türkiye?**

Only if you use a Turkish line beyond the period the rule sets. With roaming or a travel eSIM it does not apply, because you open no line in the country in your name.

**Is Türkiye part of European roaming?**

No. Although part of the country is in Europe, it belongs neither to the Union nor to the European Economic Area, so it is charged as an international zone.

**Can I use the free wi-fi in cafés and shops?**

Yes, though many networks ask for a code by text to a Turkish number, which is exactly what a visitor lacks. With your own data you skip the step.

**Do I need a translator in Türkiye?**

It helps a fair amount outside the tourist areas. With Turkish downloaded, camera translation works offline.
