Portugal is one of the easiest destinations there is where the phone is concerned: it is in the European Union, so a European plan travels with you, and the coverage is among the good ones in Europe.

## Coverage

4G across practically the whole country and 5G deployed in Lisbon, Porto and the district capitals. The Algarve is well covered, including the tourist coast, and so are the motorways.

The gaps are in the mountainous interior, on some stretches of the Serra da Estrela, and in coves and on trails along the west coast, where the signal drops considerably.

## Crossing the border by car

As you cross into Portugal the phone changes network and you get a welcome message. There is nothing to do: inside the Union the change is transparent and costs no more.

What is worth looking at before driving is the electronic toll system, which on several motorways has no barrier and charges by number-plate recognition. That is settled with the rental company, not with your connection, but it is the classic surprise of the trip.

## Madeira and the Azores

Both archipelagos are Portuguese territory and fall under European roaming just like the mainland. Coverage is good in the towns and very patchy on Madeira's mountain routes and in the calderas of the Azores, which is exactly where the walking happens.

There the usual applies: map downloaded and someone told about the day's plan.

## What you will use

It is a destination of driving, maps and photos. Between 300 and 700 MB a day with wi-fi at the accommodation in the evening.

If your plan is old or prepaid and you do not know what you have, the check is in [what your operator charges and how to find out](https://getgigapass.com/en/blog/how-much-does-roaming-cost).

Portugal uses type F sockets and 230 volts. Coming from the United Kingdom or North America you need an adapter, and from North America also check that your charger takes 230 volts.

Leaving soon?

Pick the days and the data you need. Install it before you leave and pay once.

## Frequently asked questions

**Do I need an eSIM for Portugal?**

On a normal trip not if your line is European: the country is in the European Union and your plan travels with you. It only pays off with old plans that carry few gigabytes or on long stays.

**Is coverage good in Portugal?**

Yes, almost complete 4G and 5G in the main cities. The gaps are in the mountainous interior and on coastal trails.

**Do Madeira and the Azores fall under European roaming?**

Yes, they are Portuguese territory and work like the mainland. Coverage weakens on the mountain routes.

**Am I charged anything crossing the border by road?**

No. Inside the Union the network change is transparent and is billed on your home plan.

**Do I need a plug adapter in Portugal?**

It depends where you are coming from. Sockets are type F at 230 volts, as in most of continental Europe; from the UK or North America, yes.
