Italy is inside European roaming, so the question is not which eSIM to buy but what your own plan covers. Real coverage, wi-fi and the odd cases.

In this article › The coverage, which is good and has its gaps › When something else does pay off › Italian public wi-fi › What you will use › Three practical things

Let's start with what saves time: Italy is in the European Union, so if your line is European your gigabytes travel with you on your home plan and at no surcharge. For the vast majority of trips there is nothing to buy and nothing to install.

## The coverage, which is good and has its gaps

4G across practically the whole country and wide 5G in Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin and Florence. Where it weakens is where you would expect: Alpine valleys, stretches of the Apennines, small inland villages and some of the smaller islands.

Two specific places where people are caught out: the inside of museums and buildings with very thick stone walls, and the regional mountain trains, which pass through long tunnels.

## When something else does pay off

- Old plans or prepaid with very few gigabytes a month: on a trip you use more than at home, and being out of data in Naples is exactly as awkward as in Tokyo.
- Long stays, where your operator's fair-use policy comes into play.
- Trips that combine Italy with a country outside the Union, such as Switzerland or Turkey.
- If you are going to share the connection with a laptop for days.

What European roaming covers exactly and where its limits are is in [roaming in the European Union](https://getgigapass.com/en/blog/eu-roaming-rules).

## Italian public wi-fi

There is free wi-fi in many cities and in most accommodation, with the local habit of asking for registration by phone number or email. On the high-speed trains it exists and works so-so, above all on tunnel sections.

## What you will use

Italy is a destination of maps, of translating menus and of a lot of photos. With the accommodation's wi-fi at night, the normal range is 300 to 700 MB a day.

The sum by type of traveller is in [how many gigabytes a trip really uses](https://getgigapass.com/en/blog/how-much-data-do-i-need-to-travel).

## Three practical things

1. Download the map of each city. The historic centres are labyrinths and GPS works without data once the map is downloaded.
2. Save your train tickets on the phone before setting off. The big stations have poor coverage inside.
3. If you are driving, look up each city's limited-traffic zones beforehand. It is the commonest fine of the trip and it does not depend on the connection, but you look it up with it.

112 works throughout Italy from any phone with coverage, whether the line is active or not.

Leaving soon?

Pick the days and the data you need. Install it before you leave and pay once.

## Frequently asked questions

**Do I need an eSIM to travel to Italy?**

Normally not if your line is European. Italy is in the European Union, so your gigabytes travel with you on your home plan. It makes sense with old plans that carry few gigabytes, on long stays, or if the trip combines countries outside the Union.

**Is coverage good in Italy?**

Yes, 4G in almost the whole country and wide 5G in the big cities. It weakens in Alpine valleys, inland villages and rail tunnels.

**Does my phone work in Italy without doing anything?**

Yes, on a European line. It is enough to have roaming switched on, which is the normal state inside the European Union.

**Is there free wi-fi in Italy?**

Quite a lot, in cities and accommodation, usually with registration by email or phone. On the high-speed trains it exists and works unevenly in tunnels.

**How many gigabytes does a trip to Italy use?**

Between 300 and 700 MB a day with normal use and wi-fi at the accommodation, so around 3 to 5 GB in a week.
