International SIM, travel SIM, global eSIM, multi-country card. They get used as if they were the same thing, and behind them are two different products that are paid for in different ways.

## The classic international SIM

It is a card with a number of its own, often from a small country, that connects to local networks across half the world through roaming agreements. You top it up with credit and pay by usage according to a price list per country.

It was born for frequent travellers and for people who needed a stable number outside their own country. Its advantage is that it works almost anywhere without buying anything new. Its drawback is that you pay by usage, and that makes it hard to know in advance what the trip is going to cost.

## The travel eSIM

It is a closed data plan for a destination or a region: you buy it with a set number of gigabytes and days, and there is no credit being consumed at a price per megabyte. It is normally data only.

Its advantage is knowing what it costs before you leave. Its limit is that it covers what it covers: outside that area, it does not work.

## The two, compared

| | International SIM | Travel eSIM |
| --- | --- | --- |
| How you pay | Credit and price per usage | Closed plan, paid up front |
| Number of its own | Yes, usually | Depends on the plan, often not |
| You know the cost in advance | Not entirely | Yes |
| Coverage | Many countries | The destination or region of the plan |
| Format | Physical, and sometimes eSIM | eSIM |

## Who each one is for

- A specific trip to one or two countries: a data plan for the destination, nothing more.
- A round-the-world trip or a route through many countries in a row: a regional or global plan, checking what it covers.
- Someone who needs a stable number outside their own country for work: that is where an international line with a number fits.
- Someone who travels every month for work: compare their own operator's international bundle before anything else.

## And the mistake of paying twice

It is more common than it sounds: buying a travel plan and also leaving data roaming switched on on your usual line. The phone can use the wrong line in the background and an international charge nobody asked for turns up.

How to set the phone up so that does not happen is in [your usual SIM and an eSIM at the same time](https://getgigapass.com/en/blog/use-sim-and-esim-at-the-same-time).

A global plan covers many countries but almost never all of them, and the coverage is not the same in each. Before buying one, look at the list and at the networks in the countries where you will spend the most days.

Know where you're going?

Pick your destination, days and data. Install it before you leave and pay once.

## Frequently asked questions

**What is an international SIM?**

A card with a number of its own that connects to networks in many countries through roaming agreements, normally with credit and a price per usage.

**How does it differ from a travel eSIM?**

A travel eSIM is a closed data plan for a destination or region: you know what it costs before you leave, and in exchange it covers only that area.

**Which one suits me?**

For a specific trip, the destination's plan. For a route through many countries, a regional or global plan. A stable international number makes sense mainly for work.

**Does a global plan cover every country?**

Almost never all of them, and the coverage is not the same in each. Check the list before buying.

**Can I have both at once?**

Yes, the phone holds several stored profiles. What you should not do is leave data roaming switched on on two lines at the same time.
