An international SIM is a card that works in many countries through roaming agreements. It usually comes with a number of its own and with credit, and you top it up like any prepaid.

## How you pay

Almost always by usage, against a price list per country. That's its big difference from a fixed data plan: you don't know what the trip will cost until you've taken it.

For someone who travels a lot to scattered countries, that flexibility can pay off. For one specific trip, hardly ever.

## When it's worth it

- If you travel to many different countries and don't want to buy something in each one.
- If you need a stable number that doesn't change from country to country.
- If your data use is very low and what you mainly want is to be able to call.

## When there are better options

- For a trip to one country: a plan for that destination is more predictable.
- For a regional route: a regional plan covers the area at a fixed price.
- If you use data normally, because pay-as-you-use pricing climbs fast.

The full comparison is in [what an international SIM is](https://getgigapass.com/en/blog/international-sim).

## What to check before buying one

1. The price per megabyte in the countries you're actually going to, not the headline list.
2. Whether the credit expires, and how soon.
3. Whether there's a charge for receiving calls.
4. And whether it exists as an eSIM, which saves swapping the card in your phone.

Check which countries it does NOT work in, too. Every international SIM has gaps, and they tend to be where the alternatives are thinnest.

Know where you're going?

Pick your destination, days and data. Install it before you leave and pay once.

## Frequently asked questions

**What is an international SIM card?**

A card that works in many countries through roaming agreements, normally with its own number and prepaid credit.

**Is it worth it for one specific trip?**

Hardly ever: a destination or regional plan gives you a fixed price. An international SIM suits someone travelling to lots of scattered countries.

**What should I check before buying?**

The price per megabyte in your countries, whether the credit expires, whether they charge for incoming calls and whether it comes as an eSIM.

**Does it work everywhere?**

No. They all have coverage gaps, and it's worth checking yours before buying.
