The ESTA is an electronic travel authorisation: it isn't a visa, and that distinction isn't a nicety. It's advance permission to board a flight to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, and the final decision on letting you in belongs to the border officer.

## How it works, in four steps

1. You apply online, on the official US government site, before flying.
2. You fill it in with the EXACT details of the passport you'll be travelling on.
3. You pay the official fee and wait for the answer, which usually comes quickly.
4. It stays tied to that passport for a set period and covers several entries while it remains valid.

## The mistakes that leave people on the ground

- A detail that doesn't match the passport, even one letter of a double-barrelled surname.
- Applying with the old passport and travelling on the new one.
- Leaving it until the airport: most are approved quickly, and the ones that aren't take time.
- Assuming it covers working or studying, which it doesn't.
- Paying for it on a middleman site and believing it's done, when sometimes they've only collected your details.

## What it doesn't cover

It doesn't cover travelling to work, long stays or formal study. There are specific visas for those, and using the visa waiver for something that isn't tourism or short business is among the most serious problems you can have at a border.

And it only covers the United States: Canada has its own scheme. More to the point, the Visa Waiver Program applies only to certain nationalities; if yours isn't among them you need a proper visa from a consulate, and the ESTA is no substitute for it.

> An approved authorisation isn't a guaranteed entry: it's permission to board.

## Layovers count

If your flight stops in the United States on the way to another country, you still need the authorisation and you have to clear immigration with your luggage. It's the classic surprise for anyone buying a cheap flight to Latin America with a stop there.

And that stop counts for your phone too, because it's a separate pricing zone: [roaming in the United States](https://getgigapass.com/en/blog/roaming-in-the-united-states).

The requirements, fees and validity are set by the US government and they change. The only valid source is their official site, and it's worth checking at the moment you apply.

## Frequently asked questions

**What is the ESTA?**

An electronic authorisation to board a flight to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program. It isn't a visa and it doesn't guarantee entry.

**Do I need an ESTA just to transit?**

Yes. A stop in the United States means clearing immigration, so the authorisation is needed all the same.

**Does it cover working or studying?**

No. It covers tourism and short business trips; working or studying needs a specific visa.

**Where do I apply?**

On the official US government site. Middleman pages charge more and sometimes only collect your details.
