No, your number stays active. Here's what happens to calls, your bank's texts and WhatsApp, plus the three settings that prevent surprise bills.

This is the question that holds up more purchases than any other, and the one that leaves most baskets half finished: if I add a data eSIM, do I lose my number? The short answer is no. The eSIM is added to your line, it doesn't replace it, and your number carries on working the same. The longer answer has some details worth knowing so your bill doesn't surprise you.

## Your number is still there, and it still rings

Your everyday line stays inside the phone, switched on. You can take calls and texts as normal, which is what actually matters on a trip: bank codes, hotel confirmations, a call from home.

Here's the detail that matters, and it's in the verb: not just making calls but also receiving them outside the European Union can cost money on your usual plan. Your operator charges that and it has nothing to do with whichever eSIM you're carrying. Inside the EU it doesn't, because roaming is included.

If you don't even want that possibility, you have two ways out: leave the line for texts only, or silence it entirely and tell anyone who might need you to message instead.

## WhatsApp and the rest don't notice a thing

WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal and the like are tied to your NUMBER, not to whichever card is carrying the data at the time. They carry on working the same, with your groups, your contacts and your history, and it makes no difference which line the data travels over.

- You don't have to register again or verify your number.
- You don't lose groups or conversations.
- WhatsApp calls and video calls go over data, so the eSIM pays for them and not your operator.
- Backups follow their own setting: if they're set to wifi only, they won't run on mobile data.

This holds for any app that uses your number as your identity. Changing card changes where your data goes out, not who you are.

## The three settings to get right

They're all on the same screen of your phone, in the mobile data settings. Set them before you leave and you won't touch them again all trip.

| Setting | Set it to | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Mobile data | The travel eSIM | That's the line paying for browsing |
| Calls and texts | Your everyday line | So people still reach you on your number |
| Data roaming | On for the eSIM only | This is the setting that prevents surprise bills |

The third one is what really matters. With data roaming off on your everyday line, that line can't browse even if an app tries in the background.

## What it looks like in practice

With all that set, at your destination the phone shows two lines in the status bar. One has signal and data (the travel eSIM) and the other has signal but no data (yours). That's exactly what you want: calls on yours, browsing on the travel one.

### If you need to make a phone call

Calling from your number outside the EU is billed according to your plan, and it's usually expensive. The long-standing alternative is a WhatsApp call, which goes over data and is therefore covered by the eSIM. To call a local landline (a restaurant, a taxi), check whether your travel plan includes minutes, because some do and some are data only.

### If you run out of data

Your everyday line is still there to take calls and texts, so you're not cut off. And depending on the plan you bought, you may be able to top up without changing eSIM.

## And when you get home

Set your everyday line back as the data line and switch the travel eSIM off. There's no need to delete it: it can stay stored in the phone in case you go back to the same place, using nothing at all while it's off.

If you're still deciding which option suits your trip, the full comparison is in [roaming, eSIM or local SIM](https://getgigapass.com/en/blog/roaming-or-esim).

None of these settings is permanent. You can change them at any time from those same settings, as many times as you need.

## Frequently asked questions

**Do I lose my number if I use a data eSIM?**

No. The eSIM is added as a second line and your everyday number stays inside the phone, active for calls and texts.

**Does WhatsApp work with an eSIM?**

Yes, exactly the same. WhatsApp is tied to your number, not to whichever card carries the data, so you keep your groups, contacts and history without verifying anything again.

**Am I charged for receiving calls abroad?**

Inside the European Union no, because roaming is included. Outside the EU it can cost money depending on your plan, and that's charged by your usual operator, not by the eSIM.

**Will I get my bank's text messages?**

Yes, as long as you leave your everyday line active for calls and texts, which is the recommended setup. Verification codes arrive as normal.

**How do I avoid a surprise bill?**

With one setting: leave DATA roaming off on your everyday line and on only for the travel eSIM. That way your line takes calls and messages but can't browse.
