Mexico is one of the destinations where the answer changes most with the trip. A week on the Riviera Maya with a hotel and wifi does not ask for the same thing as three weeks crossing the country by bus, even though the destination is called the same in both.

## First: city, beach or route

| Type of trip | What weighs |
| --- | --- |
| Beach with a hotel | Few gigabytes: wifi covers a good part of the day |
| Mexico City and around | Maps and ride-hailing apps all day |
| A route across the country | Long plan durations and patchy coverage between states |
| Remote work | A large plan, and check that tethering is allowed |

## The coverage, area by area

Wide 4G in the cities and along the tourist corridors, with 5G in Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara and Cancún. On the federal highways there is almost always a signal; in rural parts of Chiapas, Oaxaca or the sierra, there are real gaps.

At the archaeological sites the signal reaches the entrance and is often lost inside, which is exactly where it helps to have the map and the tickets downloaded.

## The days, which get miscalculated here

Long-haul flights tend to land in the afternoon and leave before dawn, so the first and the last day count in full. And a layover in another country is not covered by a Mexico plan: if you have a long stop and leave the terminal, for data purposes that is somewhere else.

## What you will spend

Between 300 and 700 MB a day with normal use. It goes up in Mexico City, where ride-hailing apps check the map constantly, and down on a beach trip.

The coverage area by area and the country's quirks are in [the guide to internet in Mexico](https://getgigapass.com/en/blog/internet-in-mexico).

If your route passes through Guatemala or Belize, a Mexico plan does not cover them. That is what the regional plans are for, and what each one covers is written on its page.

Leaving soon?

Pick the days and the data you need. Install it before you leave and pay once.

## Frequently asked questions

**What is the best eSIM for Mexico?**

The one that covers your full days with the gigabytes you will actually use, which on a beach trip are few and in Mexico City rather more because of transport and maps.

**How many gigabytes do I need for ten days in Mexico?**

Between 3 and 7 GB with normal use. Less on a beach trip with hotel wifi; more in the city with ride-hailing apps.

**Is there coverage at the archaeological sites?**

There usually is at the entrance and it drops inside. It is worth carrying tickets and maps downloaded.

**Does a Mexico plan work on a layover in the United States?**

No. A Mexico plan covers Mexico. Layovers are another country as far as data is concerned.

**Do I need calls?**

Not for day to day: messaging covers almost everything. Whether your plan includes them depends on the destination and the plan, and it shows on the page.
