Thailand has one quirk that changes the choice: trips last longer. Between the long flight, the internal transfers and the islands, going for less than two weeks is the exception, and that puts the sum of days ahead of the sum of gigabytes.

## Start with the days, not the data

With fifteen or twenty days ahead of you, the plan's duration is the first thing to get right. A plan that falls three days short at the end is the worst case: it leaves you without data exactly when you're organising the journey home.

Count from the day you land to the day you board home, both included. Flights to Thailand tend to arrive in the small hours and leave at night, so both ends count in full.

## Coverage: better than expected

Bangkok and Chiang Mai have broad 4G and 5G, and the tourist islands are well covered in the main towns and beaches. Where it fails is where it fails everywhere: boat crossings, mountainous interior and some remote beaches.

On boat journeys between islands the signal comes and goes, so whatever you'll need (ticket, hotel address, map) is worth having downloaded before you board.

## What you actually use

A beach trip uses less than people think, because you're away from your phone much of the day, and more than it looks like on uploading photos and videos, which is exactly what people do in Thailand.

| How you travel | Per day |
| --- | --- |
| Maps, messaging and bookings | 200 to 400 MB |
| Adding social media | 500 MB to 1 GB |
| Uploading video daily | 1.5 GB or more |

If you want to pin the number down before choosing, the per-app sum is in [how much data you actually use on a trip](https://getgigapass.com/en/blog/how-much-data-do-i-need-to-travel).

## Hotel wifi isn't a plan

There's wifi at almost every place you'll stay in Thailand, and that's precisely why a lot of people buy too small a plan. The problem isn't the hotel: it's the taxi ride, the market, the bus station and the beach, which is where you actually need the map and the translator.

## And the local alternative, for context

Buying a local SIM in Thailand is straightforward and there are counters at the airports, so here an eSIM doesn't win on paperwork as much as it does elsewhere. It wins on something else: you land with data from the moment you arrive, with no queue at dawn and without moving your own card anywhere.

The comparison of all three options, with the cases where each one wins, is in [roaming, eSIM or local SIM](https://getgigapass.com/en/blog/roaming-or-esim).

If your trip includes a long layover in another country, that layover isn't covered by a Thailand plan. Regional plans exist for that, and what each one covers is written on its page.

Leaving soon?

Pick the days and the data you need. Install it before you leave and pay once.

## Frequently asked questions

**What's the best eSIM for Thailand?**

The one that covers all your days, which in Thailand are usually more than people reckon. On a fifteen or twenty day trip, the plan's duration matters more than the data.

**How much data do I need for two weeks in Thailand?**

Between 3 and 6 GB if you mainly use maps and messaging, and between 8 and 15 if you post photos and videos every day.

**Is there coverage on the islands?**

Yes in the tourist towns and on the main beaches. On boat crossings and some remote coves the signal comes and goes, so download what you'll need beforehand.

**Is a local SIM better in Thailand?**

Buying one is easy and there are counters at the airports. What an eSIM wins here isn't the paperwork, it's landing with data from the first minute and never touching your own card.

**Does a Thailand eSIM work on a layover in another country?**

No. A Thailand plan covers Thailand. If your route passes through several countries, look at regional plans and what each one covers on its page.
