Where your line comes from decides everything. When a European plan pays off, when your own tariff already covers you, and how to choose.

In this article › The five cases › What to check in a regional plan › The rail-pass case and long routes

Let's start where almost nobody starts: whether you need to buy anything at all depends on where your line comes from. If it is from an EU or EEA country, roaming inside the Union is included by law and hard to improve on. If it is from the United Kingdom, that guarantee ended with Brexit and several operators brought the charges back. And if it is from outside Europe altogether, in Europe you pay whatever your operator charges.

So the honest first step is to check your own tariff. After that, here are the five situations where a European plan clearly earns its place.

## The five cases

1. Your line is from outside the EU, which is when a regional plan is almost always cheaper than roaming.
2. An old tariff or a prepaid plan with very few gigabytes. You use more when travelling than at home, and running out on day three is normal.
3. Long stays away from your own country, where the operator's fair use policy kicks in and surcharges can appear.
4. Routes that mix countries inside and outside the Union: Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Andorra or the Balkans.
5. A second device, like a tablet or a work phone, that you don't want to move your line into.

## What to check in a regional plan

Europe plans do not all cover the same countries, and that is the first thing to check. The second is which network they use in each country, which does not have to be the same everywhere.

| Detail | Why it matters |
| --- | --- |
| List of countries covered | Switzerland, the UK and the Balkans are in some plans and not others |
| Local network per country | It decides the coverage outside the cities |
| Validity in calendar days | It runs even if you spend two days without leaving the hotel |
| Whether it can be topped up | Welcome on a trip through several countries |

## The rail-pass case and long routes

A three-week trip crossing eight countries is the perfect example for a regional plan: one purchase, one installation and nothing to change at each border. With an EU line it would also work inside the Union, but if the line comes from outside, or the route touches Switzerland or the Balkans, the regional plan avoids the surprises.

Exactly what European roaming includes and where its limits are is in [roaming in the European Union](https://getgigapass.com/en/blog/eu-roaming-rules).

Checking your own tariff before buying anything takes five minutes and in a fair number of cases saves the purchase entirely. It is the first thing we would recommend even though we sell the other thing.

## Frequently asked questions

**Do I need an eSIM to travel around Europe?**

It depends where your line is from. With an EU or EEA tariff, roaming inside the Union is included. With a line from the UK or from outside Europe, you pay roaming and a regional plan usually wins.

**Which countries does a Europe plan cover?**

It depends on the plan. Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Andorra and the Balkans are in some and not others, so check the list before buying.

**Does it work for a rail pass trip?**

It is one of the cases where it fits best: a single purchase for the whole route and nothing to change at each border.

**What if my tariff has few gigabytes?**

Then it does pay off, because you use considerably more when travelling than at home, and running out mid-route is the most awkward scenario there is.

**Can I use it on a Mediterranean cruise?**

Not out at sea: ships use satellite networks that belong to no country and are billed separately.
