Dubai has two very different audiences, and the plan that suits one is too much for the other: the person on a twelve-hour layover on the way to Asia, and the person staying five or seven days.

## If it is a layover

On a long layover, what you need is data to get out of the airport, move around and come back. A short plan with a few gigabytes covers that easily, and it is worth checking that the catalogue's minimum duration does not force you to buy far more than you will use.

One thing to watch: the airport has wifi, but if you are going to leave the terminal, sorting the data out beforehand saves doing it in a hurry with the flight clock ticking.

## If it is a trip

Five or seven days in Dubai use more than it looks: the malls are enormous and you navigate inside them, transport is booked through an app and a lot of photos get taken. Between 400 and 800 MB a day is normal.

## What no eSIM changes

Voice and video calls through messaging apps are restricted by the local operators, and that applies to any card, local or foreign, because the traffic goes out over the country's network.

What does work and how to arrange contact with home is in [the guide to internet in Dubai and the Emirates](https://getgigapass.com/en/blog/internet-in-dubai).

## What to check on the page

- The minimum duration, which is what decides whether a layover is worth it.
- Whether the plan covers all the emirates or only Dubai.
- Whether it includes minutes, useful precisely because calls through apps may fail.

If your layover is airside only and you are not leaving, the terminal's wifi is enough and there is nothing to buy.

Leaving soon?

Pick the days and the data you need. Install it before you leave and pay once.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is an eSIM worth it for a layover in Dubai?**

If you are leaving the terminal, yes: you get around with maps and transport without depending on wifi. If you stay inside the airport, its wifi is enough.

**How many gigabytes for a week in Dubai?**

Between 3 and 6 GB. The malls and ride-hailing apps use more than people expect.

**Will video calls work?**

Calls through messaging apps are restricted in the country, and a foreign eSIM does not get around it because the traffic goes over the local network.

**Does the plan cover Abu Dhabi?**

It depends on the plan: some cover the whole country and some do not. It is written on the page.

**Is there wifi at the airport?**

Yes, and it works well. The problem starts when you leave the terminal.
